Sustainable growth strategy by the Qatar Government
Qatar, one of the fastest developing economies in the Middle East, is looking to diversify its economy and reduce dependency on oil and gas. With its strong economic growth, comes an urgent demand for basic infrastructure to support its booming economy, especially for water resources management and waste management. The Qatar government, in their discernment and foresight, want the most suitable and sustainable solutions to support their rapid economic development.
By installing Keppel Seghers' solutions, Qatar is the first country in the Middle East to adopt the sustainable and integrated waste management approach, providing impetus for further economic growth. This vital project is considered one of the many prestigious special projects that symbolize the visions and aspirations of the Emir of Qatar.
What is an integrated waste management concept?
As a leading company in the field of waste treatment, Keppel Seghers believes in integrated waste management as a sustainable development approach with the concept of "waste" being replaced by a concept of waste as a "resource".
Keppel Seghers offers an integrated waste-to-energy concept that maximizes the reuse and recovery rate from waste streams and minimizes the quantity of waste going to landfill.
Keppel Seghers provides an entire suite of proprietary waste-to-energy technologies related to the integrated waste recovery concept:
The DANO drum technology significantly reduces the waste volume and splits the waste into different fractions by mechanical waste pre-treatment.
The residual waste stream is sent to the waste-to-energy plant where the Keppel Seghers grates guarantee optimal combustion for waste streams with heating values between 4,000 and 30,000 kJ/kg.
The proprietary Boiler/prism technology allows optimal energy recovery. As such waste is converted into valuable green energy
The waste-to-energy plant is equipped with state-of-the-art flue gas cleaning technology that meets the most stringent emission regulations in the world.
The organic part of the integrated waste management center is sent to an aerobic or anaerobic installation, where valuable fertilizers and biogas are produced. Steel and aluminum are recycled separately, allowing for the waste being fully recovered via several channels.
The Keppel Seghers solid waste management facility in Qatar
The project consists of two contracts, both about equal value. The contracts are for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) of an integrated solid waste management facility in Qatar, and the operation and maintenance of this facility for 20 years.
The contracts will be undertaken by Keppel Seghers, a wholly owned subsidiary of Keppel Integrated Engineering.
Under the contract, Keppel Seghers will design and build four waste transfer stations and one integrated domestic solid waste management centre (DSWMC) to handle and treat domestic solid waste for the whole of Qatar.
Designed to treat an initial capacity of more than 1,550 tonnes of waste a day, the DSWMC will comprise waste sorting and recycling facilities, landfill, composting plant and a 1000 tonnes per day waste-to-energy (WTE) incineration plant.
The WTE plant using Keppel Seghers' water-cooled grate technology is the heart of the integrated waste treatment facility.
Other Keppel Seghers technologies to be deployed in the DSWMC include the Danodrum system for recycling and pre-treatment of waste, the Rotary Atomiser semi-dry system for flue gas treatment and the Unibrane membrane bioreactor system for waste water treatment.
Project status
The waste management centre is expected to be operational by 2009. We will update the status of the project on a regular basis on this website.

Keppel was awarded two contracts amounting to €850million from Qatar's Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture.

The foundation stone for the integrated domestic solid waste management centre (DSWMC) was unveiled by Dr. Abdulrahman Al buanain, Consultant to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture and Mr. Lim Chee Onn, Executive Chairman of Keppel Corporation, in the presence of Guest-of-Honour Mr. Lee Hsien, Loong, Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore.
